Overcommunication: Why Saying More Matters

This virtue/skill is a lifesaver, whether in business or at your workplace or in your personal relationships. Out of the many wisdoms shared by the fantastic Leadership and AI Coach, Arif Ahmed from Malaysia, in our YoungShip Bangladesh team workshop "The Power of We", this is the one which resonated with me the most and which I try to practice (every day), whether with my clients or with my team or with my family - "Overcommunication"!!

Overcommunication: Why Saying More Matters

In the words of Coach Arif:

"In the workplace, relationships, or any collaborative setting, overcommunication is often misunderstood as unnecessary or excessive. In truth, overcommunication—when done with clarity and empathy—is one of the most powerful tools to build trust, minimize confusion, and ensure alignment across diverse personalities and working styles.

Conflict Isn’t the Problem—Lack of Communication Is:

Many conflicts are not rooted in disagreement but in unspoken expectations, misunderstood intentions, or gaps in information flow. When team members or individuals operate with different communication styles, cultural norms, or personal values, assumptions easily take the place of dialogue.

Instead of viewing conflict as a failure, it's more accurate to say: Conflict is often a signal that communication has broken down."

In the words of our favorite James Clear who articulated the essence of overcommunication so easily:

"If you wait to reply because you don’t have an answer yet (or because you don’t want to share bad news), the other party often ends up making assumptions about what the delayed reply might mean.

Silence frustrates and confuses people. Better to communicate early and often.”

So the only way (generally speaking:) to be happy and successful in our life (both professional and personal) is overcommunication! Please try it for yourself, and see how it goes, and thank me later 😊
